Species Abundances Distribution in Neutral Community Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
An analytical approximation is derived for the Zero Sum Multinomial distribution which gives the Species Abundance Distribution in Neutral Community Models. The obtained distribution function describes well computer simulation results on the model, and leads to an interesting relation between the total number of individuals, total number of species and the size of the most abundant species of the considered metacommunity. Computer simulations on neutral community models, proves also the validity of this scaling relation. Typeset using REVTEX

Self-consistent approach for neutral community models with speciation.
Hubbell's neutral model provides a rich theoretical framework to study ecological communities. By incorporating both ecological and evolutionary time scales, it allows us to investigate how communities are shaped by speciation processes. The speciation model in the basic neutral model is particularly simple, describing speciation as a point-mutation event in a birth of a single individual. The ...
متن کاملRelaxing the zero-sum assumption in neutral biodiversity theory.
The zero-sum assumption is one of the ingredients of the standard neutral model of biodiversity by Hubbell. It states that the community is saturated all the time, which in this model means that the total number of individuals in the community is constant over time, and therefore introduces a coupling between species abundances. It was shown recently that a neutral model with independent specie...
متن کاملA statistical theory for sampling species abundances.
The pattern of species abundances is central to ecology. But direct measurements of species abundances at ecologically relevant scales are typically unfeasible. This limitation has motivated a long-standing interest in the relationship between the abundance distribution in a large, regional community and the distribution observed in a small sample from the community. Here, we develop a statisti...
متن کاملAccounting for dispersal and biotic interactions to disentangle the drivers of species distributions and their abundances.
Although abiotic factors, together with dispersal and biotic interactions, are often suggested to explain the distribution of species and their abundances, species distribution models usually focus on abiotic factors only. We propose an integrative framework linking ecological theory, empirical data and statistical models to understand the distribution of species and their abundances together w...
متن کاملSpecies abundances and lifetimes: from neutral to niche-stabilized communities.
We study a stochastic community model able to interpolate from a neutral regime to a niche partitioned regime upon varying a single parameter tuning the intensity of niche stabilization, namely the difference between intraspecific and interspecific competition. By means of a self-consistent approach, we obtain an analytical expression for the species abundance distribution, in excellent agreeme...
